The Condition

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The latest drone strike in Yemen, killing many in a wedding party, illustrates clearly that US policy for dispute resolution is one of death and destruction. For the last twelve years American media has been full of acts of US government terrorism on peoples who pose no real threat to the US.

With this kind of national attitude toward others, why should home grown young shooters be surprising? America has become a culture of guns and death. The evidence is everywhere.

When Socialist Liar in Chief, hussein obama was in the Senate he and his Socialist pals in government were incredibly critical of President Bush for using Water Boarding on three, repeat three Terrorists, involved in the 9/11 attack. Now, President Obama not only wants that power, he wants the power to kill Americans, without any due process of law, suspected of Terrorists activities, presumably using drones even in the United States. Forget about the Constitution, not unusual for Obama, but where are the left wing, lame stream media and other Socialists in Congress that would be screaming bloody murder if this was a Republican President. We are not hearing a word from them. What hypocrites!!

Funny how the Democratic Party of America is all for killing of the unborn...in the USA (1.3 million/yr.), the unborn in China (13.6 million/yr.), the unborn world wide (over 50 million/yr.)...and the killing of the just born, up to 3 years old...and the killing of the disabled and the elderly (just take "the pill" grandma)...and the too costly (i.e. little girls needing a lung transplant and those like her in need of healthcare). They also support killing via assassinations of political opponents. They also worship the ground Mao Zedung walked on (responsible for killing 78 million Chinese). What killing is the Democratic Party of America against? People on Death Row (43 people last year). So, let's get this straight. The Democrats support, encourage, financially promote all killings, except for those on Death Row - violent criminals who have killed "illegally."

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

“A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
    she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

The following fits Obama. Narcissistic leaders are nefarious and their effects pernicious. They are subtle, refined, socially-adept, manipulative, possessed of thespian skills, and convincing. Both types equally lack empathy and are ruthless and relentless or driven.

  • Feels grandiose and self-important (e.g., exaggerates accomplishments, talents, skills, contacts, and personality traits to the point of lying, demands to be recognised as superior without commensurate achievements);

  • Is obsessed with fantasies of unlimited success, fame, fearsome power or omnipotence, unequalled brilliance (the cerebral narcissist), bodily beauty or sexual performance (the somatic narcissist), or ideal, everlasting, all-conquering love or passion;

  • Firmly convinced that he or she is unique and, being special, can only be understood by, should only be treated by, or associate with, other special or unique, or high-status people (or institutions);

  • Requires excessive admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation – or, failing that, wishes to be feared and to be notorious (Narcissistic Supply);

  • Feels entitled. Demands automatic and full compliance with his or her unreasonable expectations for special and favourable priority treatment;

  • Is "interpersonally exploitative", i.e., uses others to achieve his or her own ends;

  • Devoid of empathy. Is unable or unwilling to identify with, acknowledge, or accept the feelings, needs, preferences, priorities, and choices of others;

  • Constantly envious of others and seeks to hurt or destroy the objects of his or her frustration. Suffers from persecutory (paranoid) delusions as he or she believes that they feel the same about him or her and are likely to act similarly;

  • Behaves arrogantly and haughtily. Feels superior, omnipotent, omniscient, invincible, immune, "above the law", and omnipresent (magical thinking). Rages when frustrated, contradicted, or confronted by people he or she considers inferior to him or her and unworthy.

Narcissism is a defense mechanism whose role is to deflect hurt and trauma from the victim's "True Self" into a "False Self" which is omnipotent, invulnerable, and omniscient. This False Self is then used by the narcissist to garner narcissistic supply from his human environment. Narcissistic supply is any form of attention, both positive and negative and it is instrumental in the regulation of the narcissist's labile sense of self-worth.

Perhaps the most immediately evident trait of patients with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is their vulnerability to criticism and disagreement. Subject to negative input, real or imagined, even to a mild rebuke, a constructive suggestion, or an offer to help, they feel injured, humiliated and empty and they react with disdain (devaluation), rage, and defiance.

The new Pope, 2013 Time Magazine Man Of The Year, is very, very, very anti-abortion. That is one of the few things that I agree with him on. Clay check the TFP and other archives, crime has been around since the beginning of time and although there have been thousands of laws passed to stop it the laws have not been able to stop the evil doers from completing their mission. If anything, we need to stop taking so long to fry, inject, or hang the criminals on death row and return to a justice system that executes on the penalties for crimes faster especially for school shooters. Another thing, Adam Lanza the Sandy Hook school shooter, according to a new book out soon, had demonstrated to his now dead Mom, school officials, and mental health officials that he was violently I'll and obsessed with kill, kill, kill, video games which by the way are so realistic it's easy to see how they could thrill, train and motivate someone with a mental illness to commit a horrendous crime. Finally, Lanza was 18 and legally chose NOT to take his schizo medications. His Mother is actually the one to blame for the Sandy Hook shootings along with the mental health system. Pass all the gun laws you want, they may make you feel good Clay Boy, but they will have little impact in stopping school shootings.

We live in a sick society that glamorizes and practically worships guns and the sense of individualism and power that they represent. Most sane people see guns for what they are: weapons of destruction that are dangerous and at the very least need heavily regulating and ideally don't even have a place in civilized society. But the gun nuts don't give a damn for civilized, they just want their "freedom" to hunt (even with rapid-fire weapons if they so choose), to kill at will, to pack heat wherever they go, to transform every gun-free zone into a kill zone. They idolize the second amendment, that obscure piece of antiquated, poorly written mumbo-jumbo in the Constitution that can be interpreted practically any way the reader wants to interpret it (it needs changing!) and think that it somehow makes America unique, but all it does is make us friggin' bash!t crazy and the most violent nation on earth as we blow each others' brains out day after day, year after year.

You gun nuts have won. Guns are too entrenched in this society for us to ever have a sane policy that sensibly regulates them. The NRA is too powerful, guns are overly romanticized in movies and the media, and there are too many people who'd rather have the "freedom" to play cowboy or backwoods militia-man or urban gangbanger or to spray bullets at some target range just because it's fun. And this craziness is learned at a very early age without any hope of there being a different mindset in future generations. So, you gun nuts have indeed won. The game is over. Enjoy your "freedom." Now, why don't you celebrate and go shoot some bullets into the air just because you can. And if one or two of those bullets hits an innocent bystander, well, so what? Such is the price of freedom, right? Ain't Amerika great?

Investigators have indicated that they believe the child accidentally shot himself in the head after he pulled the gun off a kitchen counter.

I believe that he either lied outright in his campaign promises, or he is so afraid of the military and corporate powers-that-be that he would rather err on the side of brute hawkishness than appear to be a true peace-maker.

That is the problem with you RWNJs - you are portray ALL liberals as the uttermost extremists in all things, when in reality very few liberals are that way. Most liberals are not Marxists or Communists or tree-hugging whiners but just average folks who happen to recognize the fact that the free market cannot regulate itself and there's nothing wrong with sensible regulation.

I could show countless videos of the goons from the Westboro Baptist Church and try to portray all Christians as being like that but I know that's not so. Not before the crime. Your accusation/conflation is a red herring. BOGUS.

Adam Lanza was diagnosed in with Asperger syndrome, an autism-like disorder that is not usually associated with violence. There was NO evidence Adam Lanza voiced or gave any indication to others that he intended to commit such a crime himself.

Thus there was no need for institutionalization.

Of course, only about 10% of the country pays attention to what is going on and looks at things with an open, non-politically-unbiased eye, so maybe we are screwed. But the fact we are screwed has nothing to do with who occupies, or who occupied the White House.

Police said the injuries were to the child's lower extremity.

Manchester police seized the .22-caliber handgun and said the incident is under investigation.

Regarding WWWTW's reference to King Herod: Most of the characters in the Bible are fictional. King Herod, however, was the real deal. There really was a King Herod and the writings of the historians of that era support that fact. But there is no mention whatsoever from any historian about Herod slaughtering male children, or any children at all for that matter. Funny how it's ONLY in the Bible - so that "what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah" could be "fulfilled." That, like Noah and the flood or Moses and the parting of the Red Sea or Jesus dying on a cross and rising from the dead, is baloney. Pure myth.

The one thing I don't need to do is lie to prove a point. I admitted I made a mistake. That doesn't change the fact that the kids who did the Denver shootings were all from liberal families.

People have guns in their homes because they are afraid of intruders. When was the last time you found a gang of right-wing criminals going house to house, robbing and brutalizing the occupants?

I've sent thousands of rounds "downrange" during my service in the military, and I'm sure that practice will serve me well if I have a need to use force.

Rat, Adam Lanza should have been institutionalized for his own welfare and safety before his killing spree. Read up on him and his case history. At the very least, leaving him alone to play violent video games for weeks at a time should have been a warning to SOMEONE. His mother had no choice but to keep him at home. Oh, and she was basically a nut case herself.

I never owned anything except a shotgun, used for hunting, in my whole life until my life was threatened by a criminal. The law enforcement agency involved in the case advised me to obtain a hand gun and keep it handy because of my circumstances at the time (working in an isolated area). I was 30 minutes from help by 911, at the soonest.

Parents who fail to lock up guns should go to jail. Allowing a gun to be accessed by a minor, resulting in death or injury, should be punished as 2nd Degree Murder, or attempted 2nd Degree Murder.

If all you guys can agree to let the National Guard go house to house through town, checking every home, every car, and every hiding place, and confiscate all the guns that are not legally possessed and properly locked up, then you can have mine too. Deal?

A 3-year-old boy from Kansas City, Missouri found a loaded, unlocked handgun on his father's bed. According to reports:

Police say the 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the stomach, after the boy's father left a loaded handgun lying on his bed. Just before 7 p.m. Monday night, the boy's father, Nate Steward, 34, said he returned home from the store with his 3-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter.

As Steward walked into his home with his children, he told police the handgun he was carrying inside his pants started to fall down his leg. Steward says he got into his house quickly so the gun would not fall out of his pants. Once inside, he says he placed the loaded handgun on his bed in the bedroom while his kids were in the living room and kitchen. The father then went to the back door to let one of his dogs out. While outside with the dog, Steward told police he heard a gunshot inside the home. He went back in to find his 3-year-old son bleeding and holding his stomach. The boy fell to the floor and Steward picked him up and rushed him to Children's Mercy Hospital in his own car.

The boy had surgery and should recover.

Police said when they arrived at the hospital they saw Steward's gun in plain view on the passenger seat of his car. The doors were unlocked and the windows rolled down. Anyone could have grabbed the gun.

A 4-year-old boy from La Plata, Maryland was playing outside his home. His grandmother was watching him. According to the police report:

The grandmother reported that the boy got into a car which was parked in the driveway and suddenly she heard a gunshot. The child ran to her and she noticed he had an injury to his head.

The child was flown to a hospital where it was learned he had a graze wound.

A computer check revealed the gun - a 9mm semi-automatic handgun - is registered to a member of the child's family. At this point, it is not clear why the gun was in the car and the investigation is continuing.

It should be noted that Maryland is one of the few states that requires registration of handguns. In the majority of states the police would not have been able to run a computer check on the gun to determine ownership.

A 3 year old found a loaded gun on the kitchen table in his home and shot himself in the chest. From an article:

A Horseshoe Bay boy is in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself in the chest Thursday, Horseshoe Bay Police said.

He was transported by ambulance to Dell Children's Hospital where he had his right lung removed. HSBPD say the 3-year-old boy's parents and a neighbor drove him to meet the ambulance on Thanksgiving Mountain.

Police went back to the victim's home with his parents where they found a loaded handgun on the kitchen table. The parents told police their son picked up the gun and it went off. They declined investigators' initial attempt to search the home.

After obtaining a search warrant, investigators learned the handgun they found was not the weapon involved in the shooting. They also uncovered more conflicting information.

One account said the victim's father hid the weapon in brush away from his house, but a search of the area didn't yield any results.

The suspected weapon was later found in a neighbor's home. Police say they found three handguns and a rifle that were taken there after the shooting.

6 year old Wisconsin boy shoots 3 year old sister in face; father tells boy to lie about shooting

A 6 year old Wisconsin boy who had access to a loaded gun, shot his 3 year old sister in the face on August 30 of this year. His father told him to change his story about how the little girl was shot. From an article:

A Wisconsin dad is under fire for allegedly telling his 6-year-old son to lie about shooting his 4-year-old sister in the face.

The incident happened Aug. 30 in Alma, Wis., when the boy allegedly found a loaded shotgun and pointed it at the girl. The gun discharged, striking the girl in the right side of her head, WKBT reported.

The girl's injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, but on Monday investigators charged the father, Fred Maphis, with leaving a loaded firearm near a child and obstructing an officer by telling the son to lie about the shooting, the LaCrosse Tribune reported. Further in the article:

The boy's mother told investigators that her son had been trained to use firearms since he was 3 and even had his own .22 caliber rifle that he was allowed to shoot with adult supervision, RawStory.com reported.

Maphis insisted that he had just forgotten to unload and secure the shotgun.

Charlotte Bacon, 6

Charlotte Bacon, who would have turned 7 in February, was anything but shy.

She was smart, outgoing, precocious and persistent, said her uncle, John Hagen, of Minneapolis.

“She had a big personality. She could carry on a conversation with any adult. She challenged my sister every day. She knew how to get what she wanted.”

Case in point: Charlotte’s mother, Joann, bought her a pink dress and white boots for the holidays. Charlotte had been begging to wear her new outfit early. On the last day of Charlotte’s life, her mom finally gave in.

Another story that stands out in Hagen’s mind: the time the Bacons were vacationing with extended family at a lake. Charlotte was 4 or 5. “I watched her jump off a pontoon into the water without any hesitation,” Hagen said. “She just did it.”

Charlotte had curly, dark red hair. She loved the color pink and going to school. She was so smart, Hagen said, that her parents were thinking about putting her in a special private school because they worried she wasn’t being challenged enough. “This girl was definitely going places,” her uncle said.

Charlotte was born in the Chicago area, a couple of years before Joann and husband Joel relocated to Connecticut. Joann is a stay-at-home mom. Joel, who holds a doctorate, works in New York. Their 9-year-old son, Guy, also was at Sandy Hook on Friday but wasn’t harmed.

Despite having only one sibling, Charlotte had a big family. Joel is one of three brothers. His parents are retired missionaries who now live close to him. Joann, who grew up in Minnesota, is the youngest of six children.

Charlotte also loved being a girl scout, and her mom was her troop leader.

“There were 10 girls in the group,” Hagen said. “Only five are left.”

Daniel Barden, 7

Daniel Barden was an active first-grader and the beloved youngest son of his doting mother and father, Mark and Jackie. “Daniel was fearless in his pursuit of happiness and life,” his family wrote in a statement released to the media. “He earned his ripped jeans and missing two front teeth.”

“He embodied everything that is wholesome and innocent in the world,” the statement said. “Our hearts break over losing him and for the many other families suffering loss.”

The Bardens are often shuttling their children from one activity to the next, said friends, colleagues and neighbors who admired their ability to keep up with their children’s active schedule. This summer, Daniel scored the final goal in the last game of the soccer season. He loved to swim, and his mother’s Facebook page featured a photo of her three children smiling at the beach. On Sunday morning, she posted a public note on Facebook saying, “Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.”

Jackie Barden is a second-grade teacher at Pawling Elementary School in Pawling, N.Y. She is one of the school district’s reading specialists.

“She is a wonderful mom,” said Lynn Maloney, who teaches second grade in the classroom next to Barden’s. “She was extremely close to her children. She’s a teacher and I’m a teacher, and children are really the centers of our world. She adored her family, and I am sure she must be devastated, like any mom.”

It was around 9:30 a.m. when Barden learned there was a tragedy at her son’s elementary school, colleagues said. A guidance counselor drove a shaken Barden back to Connecticut, where she learned about the loss of her 7-year-old son.

Jackie’s husband, Mark Barden, is a rock guitarist who plays at places such as Proud Mary’s, a local bar, according to Javier Mendizabal, who works there.A forum was set up on a message board called thegearpage.net to offer condolences. One man referred to Mark Barden as a “kind, gentle and humble man, as well as one of the most talented guitarists I know.”

On Saturday, friends and family members gathered in the Sandy Hook section of Newtown to visit the Bardens. A local pastor prayed with them.

Daniel’s brother, James, and sister, Natalie, are listed as ages 12 and 10 on a bio on Jackie Barden’s school Web page.The bio says the family has a pet ball python named Todd and a tortoise named Queenie.

A private wake will be held for Daniel on Tuesday, with the funeral on the following day.

Even for neighbors who did not know them intimately, such as Peter Bernson, there is an image they would see each morning they are sure they will miss — a smiling, laughing boy with a reddish-brown mop top and missing two front teeth, hoisted on his father’s shoulders, headed to the school bus stop.

It is murder, plain and simple.

Children are dying needlessly at a much much greater rate and total from causes other than by accidental gun deaths or do you just not care? Would you apply the same penalties for the other accidental deaths as you would to gun owners? By your own definition they are also murder plain and simple ... Right? I guess in your case it’s “Stupid is as stupid does”.

Every death of a child is a terrible tragedy but they are a reality of the human condition. You seem to be inordinately fixated only on accidental gun deaths which is last on the list of causes. I don’t know if it’s ego stroking on your part are only a lack of perspective.

From the National Center for Health Statistics - 2007

Causes of Death, Ages 0-19 (For the age group you reference the totals would be about one half the listed totals)

Natural = 36,272

Unintentional Injury = 11,560

Homicide = 3,345

Suicide = 1,665

Accidental firearm deaths fall under the Unintentional Injury group with a total of 138 for a mortality rate of 0.2 / 100,000.

Motor Vehicle = 6,683

Drowning = 1,056

Fire/Burn = 544

Poisoning = 972

Firearm = 138

Maybe a post, every now and then, on safe driving, seat belts, and fenced-in pools would be a greater aid to prevent unnecessary childhood deaths ... don’t you think so? But they're not sexy enough ... are they?

The latest drone strike in Yemen, killing many in a wedding party, illustrates clearly that US policy for dispute resolution is one of death and destruction. For the last twelve years American media has been full of acts of US government terrorism on peoples who pose no real threat to the US. With this kind of national attitude toward others, why should home grown young shooters be surprising? America has become a culture of guns and death. The evidence is everywhere.

What I can’t understand is that with all of that widely known evidence; the U.S.’s very close neighbor, the saintly and pure Canada and her self-righteous citizens, is also complicit in these activities. Obviously aware of the U.S. crimes against humanity they have made no serious attempt to aid in bringing the evil U.S. to justice in any international court of justice. So please show the proof the tragedy at Sandy Hook would not have happened if she had locked up her guns.

Whenever there is a bombing people blame the bomber, but whenever there is a shooting people blame the gun.

Olivia Engel, 6

In nearly every Facebook photograph of Olivia Rose Engel, the 6-year-old girl is smiling.

In one photo, she is wearing a ladybug costume, her cheeks flushed and scrunched up in a grin. In another, she is standing in front of a Christmas tree, stopping mid-decoration to pose for the camera. In yet another, she is dressed in white, light streaming through a window behind her.

“Beautiful little angel,” commented a Facebook friend.

Olivia was one of 20 students who died in Friday’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. She is survived by her parents, Brian and Shannon Engel, and her 3-year-old brother, Brayden.

Her parents and other family members declined requests for interviews over the weekend, but Brian Engel released a statement about his daughter.

Olivia’s favorite colors were pink and purple, he said. Her favorite stuffed animal was a lamb. She loved school and did well in math and reading. She liked to draw and took art classes. She played tennis and soccer, and liked musical theater.

Olivia was a Daisy Girl Scout, enjoyed swimming, and took dance lessons in ballet and hip hop

She was an active member of her family’s church, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Newtown, where she was supposed to appear in a Nativity play Saturday night; she was supposed to play the part of an angel. Every night, she led grace at her family’s dinner table.

“She was insightful for her age and had a great sense of humor,” the family statement said. “She was a grateful child who was always appreciative and never greedy… She was a 6-year-old who had a lot to look forward to.”

On Saturday, family friends created a memorial page on Facebook in Olivia’s memory and set up a fund so people could make donations to the Engel family. Well wishes from friends and strangers, as well as numerous photographs made the rounds on the social networking site.

Family pictures were tradition for the Engel family, who at least twice this year met with photographer Tim Nosenzo for portraits. Over the summer they gathered at the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club in Westport, Conn., where the family posed for photos at the club, along the shore and on a boat.

“Always a nice way to spend a summer morning,” Nosenzo wrote on his professional Web site, where he posted the images last month.

In November, Nosenzo photographed the family again — this time for what Nosenzo described as “our annual Christmas card photo shoot” in Tarrywile Park in Danbury, Conn.

“This is a tragedy beyond understanding,” Nosenzo wrote on his Web site Saturday.

Olivia’s wake has been scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Honan Funeral Home in Newtown. Her funeral Mass will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Josephine Gay, 7

In a photo taken not too long ago, Josephine Grace Gay was captured seemingly mid-giggle, with her glasses perched precariously on the tip of her nose, a smile spread across her face, and what appeared to be a lime-green traffic cone atop her head.

She had “playful spirit” and a “loving heart,” her family wrote in an obituary published in the Newtown Bee newspaper.

Josephine was killed just three days after celebrating her seventh birthday. Survivors include her parents, Bob and Michele Gay; her sisters, Sophia and Marie; and three grandparents.

Her family will gather Saturday for her memorial service at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown, Conn. In her obituary, her family asked those attending to wear purple clothing. Purple was Josephine’s favorite color.

The teabaggers are irrelevant and their billionaire puppeteers are exposed as the hateful, greed merchants that they are; their radical little squirrels in the Congress cannot avoid spouting illogical craziness ; and the "traditional conservatives" who have now had enough of them have got their knives out. Let the games begin!

Those of us on the far left have the best seats in the place because there might soon scarcely be anything left of their fascist arses.

You mentioning the supposedly irrelevance of the Tea Party got me to thinking about the relevance of you Fleabaggers on the “far” left. I was thinking of a comparable group to the Tea Party on your end of the political spectrum. Then it dawned on me I couldn’t remember the group’s title as they have had such a zero impact on the body politic. I had to Google to find their title ... Oh Yeah, it’s “Occupy Wall Street”. Man did they leave an indelible impact just before they completely evaporated in a cloud of rancid smog ... Right?

Dylan Hockley, 6

Dylan Hockley smiles online in a series of family photos. He’s Shrek, his mom writes. Or he’s “Super Dylan” — posed in a Superman outfit. In other images, he poses with his brother, Jake.

Dylan, 6, was one of the pupils at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., slain Friday in the second-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Dylan had lived across Yogananda Street from where the violence began. His neighbor, Nancy Lanza, was the mother of the suspected shooter — and apparently the first person killed Friday.

Madeleine Hsu, 6

Each afternoon when the school bus pulled up, Madeleine Hsu’s mother and little sister would be waiting for her. Mother and daughter always greeted each other with hugs, said Karen Dryer, a neighbor.

“They were clearly very close and loved each other very much,” said Dryer, who knew the 6-year-old as “Maddy.”

Maddy, Dryer said, was “a beautiful, gentle soul who was taken way too early.” Shy and sweet, the first-grader would light up when she got a chance to pet Eli, Dryer’s golden retriever, at the bus stop between their houses.

Attempts to reach Maddy’s family and other neighbors were unsuccessful. A state trooper in the family’s driveway told Dryer that the family wanted him there because they did not want to deal with the media.

Memorial Web pages appeared on Facebook and Legacy.com, but they did not appear to be connected to the Hsu family. The only publicly visible online comment that appeared to come from Maddy’s family came in the form of a hauntingly simple photograph.

A Facebook account belonging to Arline Arnold, believed to be related to Maddy, had its profile picture changed Friday night to show a young girl smiling brightly. In the picture, a pink bow in the young girl’s hair matched the pink sweater she wore. Several people commenting on the photo offered their condolences.

Maddy and her family had moved to the neighborhood only in the past year or two, so Dryer did not know them that well. She just knew what she saw at the bus stop.

Dryer’s son, Logan, rode the bus with Maddy; he was a kindergartner at Sandy Hook Elementary School but was out sick on the day of the massacre.

Maddy would play with Eli, and her mother would laugh and say that she loved dogs. And then Maddy would go into her mother’s arms, into the family’s minivan and down the long driveway to their home.

Rick1, your rant about narcissism applies to any politician. There is no other reason to become a politician. You can never do any "real" good, you have already been bought and sold to the highest bidder(s), who generally only worry about their best interest, not ours.

A very interesting take ... it almost screams limited governmental intrusion in our daily lives ... don’t you think so?

Arkansas 3 year old finds gun and shoots himself

There's been another accidental gun discharge, killing a 3 year old in Arkansas. From an article:

This morning a family is grieving the loss of a three-year-old little boy who accidentally shot and killed himself.

It happened Sunday afternoon on Kerr Station Road in Lonoke County.

Detectives say the boy was at a neighbor's house, when he followed a man into the bedroom.

As the man took out his contact lenses, investigators say the toddler grabbed a loaded gun off the nightstand and pulled the trigger.

Lt. Jim Kulsea said, "Any gun, doesn't matter if it has a safety or not, make sure it's not anywhere where a child can reach it or get to it."

Lonoke County Sheriff's detectives believe this was an accident but they're still investigating it.

After they're finished, the case will be turned over to the district attorney who will decide if any charges should be filed.

Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

Catherine Hubbard, 6

Besides her red hair, Catherine Violet Hubbard’s most striking characteristic was her love of animals. She wanted to protect and care for them — an ambition the first-grader is fulfilling even in death.

In her memory, her parents, Jennifer and Matthew Hubbard, have asked people to donate money to the Animal Center, the Newtown animal rescue organization.

So far, the center has received about 20 donations ranging from $20 to hundreds of dollars, said Harmony Verna, the director of the center’s board. The center is pooling the donations submitted in Catherine’s name and plans a project that will honor her, although they have not decided what it will be.

Verna said friends of Catherine’s family had adopted animals from the shelter in the past.

“We are so touched and warmed that this family could reach through their grief to do something for us,” Verna said. “This little girl wanted to grow up to be a veterinarian, and these donors are helping make that dream come true in some way.”

Besides her love for animals, a death notice in the Newtown Bee said, Catherine’s family will remember her for her constant smile. She leaves behind an older brother, grandparents, a great-grandmother, and four uncles and four aunts. Family members declined to talk about Catherine, who was 6, but her parents released a statement saying they were “greatly saddened by the loss of our beautiful daughter.”

Her funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Grace McDonnell, 7

When Grace Audrey McDonnell grew up, she wanted to be an artist and live on Martha’s Vineyard and perhaps paint seascape scenes from an easel on the beach.

“A beautiful and artistic soul,” her family said in an obituary, “Grace was truly a gift from God and represented all that is good in this world.”

With a cherubic face, dark blond hair and blue eyes, Grace was an outgoing girl often seen by neighbors playing in her family’s front yard.

The Werden family lives across the street from the McDonnell home in the Sandy Hook section of Newtown. The two families shared a school bus stop. On many mornings, the Werdens saw Grace’s father, Christopher McDonnell, a competitive runner, out for jog.

Todd Werden described Grace as a “real little doll” and called her death “heartbreaking.”

“It’s just unfathomable,” he said.

Tania Domingos, 21, who lives next door to the McDonnells, said they were well regarded in the wooded neighborhood.

“The family is very nice. They are very kind people,” Domingos said. “It’s obviously such a tragedy.”

Grace McDonnell is survived by her parents, Christopher and Lynn Zapf McDonnell, her brother, Jack Sheridan McDonnell, and her grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, the McDonnells requested that donations be made to the Grace McDonnell Memorial Fund at the Fairfield County Community Foundation in Norwalk, Conn.

In a statement, her family wrote: “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from so many people. Our daughter Grace was the love and light of our family. Words cannot adequately express our sense of loss.”

Her funeral will be held Friday.

I could show the video of that tea-party woman stupidly screaming for the government to "keep its hands off my Medicare" and try to portray all conservatives as stupid as that (oh wait...most of them ARE like that!), but I don't do that.

As often as you shoot yourself in the foot, rhetorically, you definitely shouldn’t own or handle firearms.

Quick to cheer up those in need of a smile, Emily Parker never missed a chance to draw a picture or make a card.

Her father, Robbie Parker, fought back tears as he described the beautiful, blonde, always-smiling 6-year-old girl who loved to try new things, except food.

Parker, one of the first parents to publicly talk about his loss, expressed no animosity for the gunman, even as he struggled to explain the death to his other two children, ages 3 and 4. He's sustained by the fact that the world is better for having had Emily in it.

"I'm so blessed to be her dad," he said.

But the two younger kids got hold of a loaded .9mm handgun, and it was unintentionally discharged, hitting Eric in the chest. He died soon after.

Another tragic accidental shooting, this one in Texas: Emilee Bates was accidentally killed by her step-brother on her 13th birthday Tuesday. Police say Austin McCord, 19, was clearing his AK-47 at the time. He ejected two dummy rounds that were above the loaded magazine, then pulled the trigger in what he believed was a safe move, NBC 5 reports. The sheriff explains that "once you've emptied the weapon, it's always safer to get the pressure off of the trigger, and that's what he thought he was doing." But McCord forgot about the loaded magazine, and the gun went off, shooting Emilee in the stomach.

"He believed he was making the weapon safe by pulling the trigger to drop the bolt on an empty chamber," the sheriff's office said in a statement obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Police were called to the home around 8:30pm, where the step-siblings were alone; Emilee had been studying. The seventh-grader died in a Fort Worth hospital around 10pm. The case is considered an accident, and police say no charges will be filed.

Liberals are phonies and demagogues when they squeal that pro-lifers only care about babies inside the womb. Your fairy tales about being more compassionate and caring may bring you great comfort and self-satisfaction, but they are merely fairy tales. You are, in fact, tight-fisting phonies.

The facts:

“Democrats Vs. Republicans: Who's The Most Greedy?” (Investor’s Business Daily, Mon, Jan 30 2012) http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorials/012712-599290-democrats-like-giving-money-from-others.htm

http://faculty.maxwell.syr.edu/acbrooks/Pages/Who%20really%20cares/WSJ%20review%2012-22-06.pdf

From Who Really Cares: America's Charity Divide -Who Gives, Who Doesn't, and Why It Matters by Arthur C. Brooks:

“Conservative households in America donate 30% more money to charity each year than liberal households, even in spite of lower average incomes

“Conservatives are also more generous in other ways, such as blood donations, and volunteer work. In fact, if liberals gave blood like conservatives do, the blood supply in the U.S. would jump by about 45%

“People who mistrust big government give more than those who rely on the government to take care of the poor. This includes giving and volunteering even to traditionally “progressive causes” such as the arts and the environment

“Conservative “red” states give away far more of their incomes than liberal “blue” states do

“Religious people give away four times more money each year than secularists. This is not just because of giving to churches – religious people are 10 percent more likely than secularists to give money to explicitly nonreligious charities

“Religious people are far more generous than secularists with their time. For instance, a religious person is 57% more likely than a secularist to help a homeless person

“Religious people are also more generous in informal ways, such as giving money to family members, and behaving honestly”

alprova, you know my opinion on abortion. I think it should be encouraged in those cases where the mother and father cannot be responsible for and provide for a kid. I also feel strongly about sterilization being included and if not the first abortion then by all means the second. I think not only should abortion be encouraged in those cases where the kid cannot be supported since is not there since it is evident taxpayers would be making a good ROI if they were willing to pay for the abortion & sterilization. No agreement to sterilization then pay for your own. The male should be included in the sterilization process when identified and verified. Those women entering the country illegally to give birth in the U.S. should be returned to their own country along with the new born. Some states are getting smarter and considering the sterilization option while others like Texas are ignorantly still trying to prevent abortions.

When i was a kid, we shot fireworks, threw knives, played with fire, even went swimming. There are more deaths from swimming than fire arms when it comes to children.

Every swimming pool a child swims in must first be built by an adult.
